A letter for

Alex

on your birthday, my love

scroll, slowly

My dearest Alex,

I've started this letter a dozen times, because no single word felt big enough to hold a whole year of loving you. So I'll just begin where my heart keeps returning: to you. To the ordinary Tuesday mornings and the late, laughing nights, to every quiet in-between that you somehow turn golden.

Today the world gets to celebrate the day you arrived in it — but I get to celebrate the day my life finally made sense. Happy birthday. I hope you feel, even for a moment, how impossibly loved you are.

Reasons, and there are many

Why I love you

  1. The way you hum when you think no one is listening.
  2. How you make strangers feel like old friends.
  3. That you remember the small things I forget I said.
  4. Your courage — quiet, stubborn, and entirely yours.
  5. How you reach for my hand without ever looking.
Moments I keep

Us, remembered

The night we met

A crowded room, then only you

You laughed at something I said and the rest of the room went soft and far away. I knew, even then, that I wanted to keep making you laugh.

One ordinary summer

Coffee, rain, and nowhere to be

We stayed in all day and called it an adventure. It was. Every small life with you turns out to be the one I'd choose again.

All my love, today and the day after,

always yours
